An estimated 333,830 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in the United States in 2026, and 36,320 will die from it. Black men are 1.7 times more likely to be diagnosed than White men and twice as likely to die. One in six Black men will be diagnosed in his lifetime.
Prostate cancer detected early carries a five-year relative survival rate above 99 percent. Detected after it has spread, that figure falls to 38 percent. The disparity in outcomes is substantially a disparity in when men are screened and how quickly they reach specialty care.

Health equity

Sixty-eight percent of Black adults subscribe to home broadband, compared with 83 percent of White adults. Nineteen percent of Black Americans depend on a smartphone as their only path to the internet, compared with 13 percent of White Americans. The federal Affordable Connectivity Program, which subsidized service for more than 23 million low-income households, expired in mid-2024 with no full replacement.
The consequence is compounding. As artificial intelligence reshapes hiring, credit, healthcare, and education, communities entering that transition without reliable connectivity, devices, or skills will absorb its costs without accessing its benefits.
