Wondering what the latest DMV procedures are coming out of COVID? Do you need an appointment to renew your driver's license or can you do it online? How about transferring your vehicle from out-of-state? And what about the Real ID deadline?

Since 2016, we've been a leading source of DMV-related information helping people skip DMV hassles and save time — and today we're officially launching our DMV Wiki — also at helloskip.com/dmv-wiki.

*As a third-party, Skip is not affiliated or owned by any government entities.

What questions can Skip's DMV Wiki help me with?

Over the years, Skip's team has written thousands of posts and articles related to DMV tips in every single state and we regularly check the most updated information from government websites.

In fact, here are our ultimate DMV guides to every single US state. They include links to driving permits, road tests, license and registration renewals, Real ID's, and everything in between.

Now, on our DMV wiki, we've pulled out the most relevant information for you to preview. Just like how Google provides snippets for important information, we've done the same.

Here are two examples. They also come with photos and share buttons.

Is this DMV information up-to-date and accurate?

As an independent third-party we try out best to keep information up-to-date and accurate — but our main goal is to answer the key questions for you. If in doubt, we advise you to also check on the official DMV websites to verify information.

Often people will start on Skip to find out how to do a DMV process, and then we'll link them to further information, such as the official DMV website, when necessary. For example, Skip help's people book DMV appointments, but in some cases when the appointment process changes, we'll point you to the official DMV website.

What are three important DMV tips I should always keep in mind?

First and foremost, DMV's across the country continue do digitize and advance their technologies and capabilities. That's good news for everyone, and in the long run this means that the DMV experience will continue to improve for you.

Three things to keep in mind right now are:

Do you need to go to the DMV in person?

First, since the pandemic, many DMV's across the country have accelerated their digital transformations, putting more services online. You should always ask yourself: Do I need to go in in person or can this be done online? If you can skip the visit then you should. Our DMV wiki also helps answer those questions.

If you do need to visit, what's the most time-efficient way to visit?

Second, if you do need to go in person, weigh your options. For example, if you need to upgrade to the Real ID, in most states you'll need to go in in person. If you need to take your permit test or road test, or otherwise have yourself or your vehicle verified, you'll likely need to go in in person. By far, appointments are your best option, but not all states have appointments. You can get help with the appointment process — and often get faster appointments — on Skip here.

If appointments are available, and you know DMV lines are long where you live, you can consider line waiting services, so you can save time. Skip's DMV line waiting service is here.

Plan ahead and set renewal reminders for yourself

Lastly, most of the DMV stress is related to urgent driving-related business, such as renewing your license in a hurry. To make future DMV interactions smooth, it's a good idea to set up reminders so you don't forget about renewing your registration or license. This will allow you to plan ahead and either have time to get an appointment or do online without incurring late fees. There are many ways to set reminders for yourself; on the free Skip app you can also add DMV-related reminders too.
