If you’ve recently become a “Known Traveler” with the Transportation Security Administration’s (TSA) PreCheck program, there may be some additional steps you’ll need to take to ensure your air carrier knows you've enrolled too—especially if you’ve already booked your flight.
Here’s what you need to know about TSA PreCheck, and how to add a Known Traveler Number (KTN) to an existing reservation if you’ve recently gotten yours.
How Do I Add My Known Traveler Number to An Airline Reservation?
If you received your KTN after booking an existing airline reservation, you may add it at the boarding counter, or at the self-service kiosk at the airport. You may also be able to add it to your reservation online, when you print your boarding pass 24 hours before your flight, however, this step involves creating an account with the airline you’re flying with.
📌 Pro tip: Memorize your KTN, and add it to all your airline company profiles.
You can always call your airlines directly and ask them to add your KTN to any existing reservations. Here’s a list of handy numbers, and prompts, to get you through the hold music quickly.
- Alaska Air – 1-800-252-7522
- American Airlines – 1-800-433-7300
- Continental – 1-866-935-9266
- Delta Airlines – 1-800-221-1212

What is TSA PreCheck?
TSA PreCheck is a government “membership” program designed to expedite the boarding process of participants. A KTN indicates you’ve been vetted as a low-risk traveler.
- Eligibility. To qualify for the TSA PreCheck program, applicants must be U.S. citizens or nationals, or lawful permanent residents. Global Entry, NEXUS, and SENTRI systems allow some foreign nationals to apply.
- TSA Pre-Check Fee. A 5-year membership in the TSA PreCheck program costs $85, renewals are $70 every five years thereafter. Some credit card loyalty programs will reimburse the $85 TSA PreCheck application fee. Check to see if yours does too.
What are the Benefits of Becoming a TSA PreCheck Member?
If you’re tired of shuffling along, undressing and removing your shoes, or unpacking your neatly stowed electronics, you’ll enjoy the ease of proceeding through designated TSA PreCheck check points without the hassle, and gain expedited access to your boarding area — usually in under five minutes.
