As states around the U.S. battle COVID-19, many government services have been put on hold to keep residents safe and curb spread, including DMV services. The good news is that DMVs around the US are extending deadlines for registrations, license renewals and other business. In this post, we will be breaking down everything you need to know about DMV extensions. Don’t see your state? We will be updating this post regularly so check back for the latest info.

DMV Extensions in California

The California DMV has extended the deadlines for most services in order to minimize in-person visits and has also revamped their website in order to allow for more online services. Here is the latest on extensions in California:

Drivers’ Licenses: License holders 70 & over whose licenses are expiring between March and December of 2020 will get a one-year extension. Commercial Drivers’ License holders whose licenses are expiring between March and September will get an extension through the end of September. All other license holders will need to renew, but most holders will qualify for online renewal.

Permits: Permits expiring between March and September of 2020 are being extended by 6 months or until 24 months from original permit application, whichever is earlier.

Registration: For registration that expired between March 16th and May 30th, late fees for renewal have been waived as long as you renew within 60 days of expiration.

DMV Extensions in Florida

In Florida, the DMV has extended the deadlines for many services to minimize in-person visits. Here are the latest extensions in Florida:

Drivers’ Licenses: Driver’s licenses that expired on or after March 16th have been extended to September 30th. Commercial Drivers’ Licenses that expired on or after March 1st have been extended to September 30th as well. It’s possible that they will be further extended.

DMV Extensions in New York

Although New York is one of the only states where COVID-19 cases are trending downward, the DMV is still extending the deadline for many services to keep community spread limited. Here are the latest DMV extensions in NY:

Drivers’ Licenses: All Drivers’ Licenses and non-license IDs that expired on or after March 1 have been extended by executive order until further notice.

Permits: Permits that expired on or after March 1 have been extended by executive order until further notice.

Registration: Registration for vehicles that expired on or after March 1 have been extended by executive order until further notice.

Vehicle Inspection: Inspections that expired on or after March 1 have also been extended by executive order.

Pre-Licensing Course Certificates: The NY DMV will honor any pre-licensing course certificates that expired during the pandemic.
