Thinking about getting your driver's license at the Alabama DMV? Here's exactly what you need to know to get your permit, pass your road test, and get your Alabama driver license.

Here's How to Get Your Alabama Driver's License:

Here's what you'll need to get your Alabama license:

Driver or Learner License (age 16 and older):

  1. Two forms of identification, at least one of which contains a photograph (one form must be from the “primary” list, in addition to the Social Security card) or three forms of non-photo identification (one form must be from the “primary” list, in addition to the Social Security card)
  2. Social Security card, acceptable school enrollment form or proof of graduation (if younger than 19 and applying for the first time), and 2 Proofs of Principal Residence.
  3. $5 test fee and 36.25 to purchase license

If you are 15 years old:

  1. U.S. birth certificate (certified and issued by the Bureau of Vital Statistics - NO PHOTOCOPIES).
  2. Social Security card, acceptable proof of school enrollment or graduation, and 2 Proofs of Principal Residence
  3. $5 test fee and 36.25 to purchase license

Here's what you'll need to do to get your Alabama license:

  1. Visit any DMV Office near you to apply in person and provide the required documents and pay the fees.
  2. Take and pass the knowledge and written test to be issued a Learner's permit. (Read the Alabama Driver Manual and take written practice tests). Consider making a DMV appointment or getting a line waiting concierge.
  3. Schedule your road test on the DMV website or you can schedule on Skip. If you need a car or driver for your road test, you can schedule a road test concierge here.
  4. Before your road test, visit the ultimate Alabama DMV road test guide to find out more information about the Alabama driving test.
  5. Take and pass the road test at the same location that issued the permit, but not until 10 days after the permit was issued. If you do not pass the road test within the 6 month period, you are permitted one extension of the learner's permit for an additional 6 months, provided application is made and a second fee of $5.00 is paid before the original permit expiration date, otherwise your fee is forfeited.
  6. Once you pass the road test you will be issued a License valid for 8 years.
  7. Once you pass your driving test, you’ll receive your restricted Driver’s License. You must hold your license for a minimum of 6 months and be 17 years old before you can apply for a Stage III Unrestricted driver’s license.
  8. Visit the DMV Office and turn in your Stage II or your restricted license for the Stage III or unrestricted Driver's License.

Here are Alabama driver's license exceptions to note:

  • Individuals who are age 18 and older may apply immediately for a Stage III license (passing score on road skills exam is required).
  • Alabama Law Enforcement Agency Driver License Division does not accept checks. Cash or money orders are accepted. Credit Cards are also accepted (MasterCard, Visa or Discover) convenience fee of 4% applies to the total charge.
  • You must hold your provisional license for a minimum of 6 months before you can proceed to the next Driver License stage.
  • In certain circumstances, there are few exceptions in which teens are exempt from the GDL program and may obtain an unrestricted driver’s license without first having obtained a learner’s permit. These includes the following:
  • 16 years old or older who are married and considered the head of household
  • legally relieved of minority status (the state or period of being below the legal age).
  • Does not apply to individuals who are age 17 or older who have had valid driver licenses for six months or longer.
