Here's How to Get Your Arizona Driver's License
Here's what you'll need to get your Arizona license:
- Completed Driver License/Identification Card Application (Form 40-5122)
- Proof of identity, age, and legal presence in Arizona
- Minimum of 2 documents from this full list of accepted documents (must be provided as originals or certified copies)
- Proof of Social Security number
- Out-of-state driver’s license (if applicable)
- Payment for Class D driver’s license fee, based on your age:
- Drivers' license fee, which varies by age. For drvers 16 to 39 years old it is $25; for drivers 40 to 44 years old it is $20; for drivers 45 to 49 years old it is $15; for drivers 50 years old and older it is $10. You will also need a $7 payment for Learner’s Permit fee (if applicable).
Here's what you'll need to do to get your Arizona license:
- Read the Arizona Driver Manual and take written practice tests online
- Apply for your Learner’s Permit: submit the required documents and ID at the DMV; consider making a DMV appointment or getting a line waiting concierge
- At the DMV, submit the application for a driver's license, pass the written test, pass the vision test, and receive your Learner’s Permit

- Once you pass your road test you'll receive a temporary driver's license. Then, you'll receive your new Class D driver’s license via U.S. mail.
Here are Arizona driver's license exceptions to note:
- Do you hold a current out-of-state license? Then the MVD will likely waive the written and road tests, but you'll still need to show up and apply for an Arizona license.
- Under age 18? Then a parent or guardian will need to sign your application with MVD as witness, or have the application signature notarized.
