Thinking about getting your driver's license at the Arkansas DMV? Here's exactly what you need to know to get your permit, pass your road test, and get your Arkansas driver license.

Here's How to Get Your Arkansas Driver's License:

Here's what you'll need to get your Arkansas license:

  • Social Security Number verification (card) or sign an affidavit that you do not have it.
  • Proof of your identity
  • Proof of your date of birth
  • Legal proof of your change of name, if your name differs from that shown on your birth certificate
  • Proof of your legal presence in the US

This short quiz will help you identify the documents you need to get a REAL ID.

Here's what you'll need to do to get your Arkansas license:

  1. Pay the $5 testing fee.
  2. Pass the Vision Test. You should have a minimal uncorrected visual acuity of 20/40 for an unrestricted license, and a minimal corrected visual acuity of 20/70 for a restricted license. If you have prescribed eyeglasses or contact lens, you should wear them during the test.
  3. Pass the written Knowledge test. To help you pass the written test you can study the state's driver handbook and and take written practice tests.
  4. Have your picture taken and get your instruction permit.
  5. Pass the Road Test. Schedule your road test on the DMV website or you can schedule on Skip. If you need a car or driver for your road test, you can schedule a road test concierge here. Before your road test, visit the ultimate Arkansas DMV road test guide to find out more information about the Arkansas driving test.
  6. Have your picture taken and pay the $40 license fee. You may pay by credit card (Visa, MasterCard, or Discover), cash, or check payable to the Department of Finance and Administration. If you pay by credit card, you must pay an additional $2 fee.

Here are Arkansas driver's license exceptions to note:

  • Every applicant, regardless of age, must hold a learner's permit before getting a driver's license in Arkansas. The only exception is for new residents with a valid out-of-state license (see above).
  • Once you pass your vision and written tests, you'll receive a learner's permit.
  • If your proof of ID shows a different name (e.g., if your name has changed due to marriage, divorce, or court order), you must provide proof of the legal name change, such as a marriage license or divorce decree.
