Thinking about getting your driver's license at the Georgia DMV? Here's exactly what you need to know to get your permit, pass your road test, and get your Georgia driver license.

Here's How to Get Your Georgia Driver's License

Here's what you'll need to get your Georgia license:

  1. Proof of identity (including your full name), date of birth, Social Security number or proof of ineligibility for a Social Security number, US citizenship, and your residential address in Georgia
  2. Fill out and sign a Driving Experience Affidavit (Form DDS-7), to certify that you have practiced driving (whether you have an instruction permit or you don’t, you must certify that you practiced supervised driving for at least 40 hours, 6 hours of which were at night)
  3. Complete your application form which can be done online (You can also obtain an application form at the Customer Service Center)
  4. Payment - $32.00 ($20.00 for a five-year license for a noncitizen) paid by cash, check or card.

Here's what you'll need to do to get your Georgia license:

  1. Read the Georgia Driver’s Manual and take online practice exams to prepare for the written test
  2. Visit your nearest DDS Customer Service Center to apply for your Learner’s Permit or you can schedule on Skip. Submit the required documents & ID, pass 2 written tests, pass the vision test, submit payment, receive your Learner’s Permit
  3. Practice driving with a Class C-licensed driver who is over 21 years old. Here is a list of the top 10 driving schools in Atlanta, Georgia.
  4. Once you're ready, schedule your road test on the DMV website or you can schedule on Skip. If you need a car or driver for your road test, you can schedule a road test concierge here.
  5. Before your road test, visit the ultimate Georgia DMV road test guide to find out more information about the Georgia driving test.
  6. Receive your new Class C driver’s license via U.S. mail.

Here are Georgia driver's license exceptions to note:

  • Don’t need to practice driving?  Then you do not need a Learner’s Permit.
  • Under age 18?  Then you will receive an intermediate driver’s license that can be converted to a Class C license when you turn 18.
  • Failed the written test?  Then you can retake it on a later day for an additional $10 fee.
  • Need a REAL ID?  Then visit our Georgia REAL ID [embedded link] page to find out what is required.
