Here's what you'll need to get your Minnesota license:
- Proof of identity, such as a passport
- Social Security number (SSN)
- For a name change, one of the following is necessary: A certified marriage certificate; A certified divorce or dissolution of marriage decree specifying the name change; Other certified court order specifying the name change
- Applicable Fees
Here's what you'll need to do to get your Minnesota license:
- Go to Minnesota DMV website for faster Driver's License application.
- Visit any DMV Office near you to apply in person and complete the application at the DMV.
- Provide the documents, pay the fees and pass the vision screening and knowledge test.

- Once you pass the driving test, the DMV officer will take a picture of you and you will receive your temporary license. Your permanent license will arrive in the mail.
Here are Minnesota driver's license exceptions to note:
- If you are on active duty with the U.S. armed forces and have a valid Minnesota driver's license, you are not required to renew your license until you are discharged, regardless of your length of service.
