Thinking about getting your driver's license at the North Carolina DMV? Here's exactly what you need to know to get your permit, pass your road test, and get your North Carolina driver license.

Here's How to Get Your North Carolina Driver's License

Here's what you'll need to get your North Carolina license:

  1. Four (4) documents to prove your identity, age, Social Security number, and residency
  2. Payment: $20 for Learner’s Permit, $40 for Class C driver’s license (valid for 8 years)

Here's what you'll need to do to get your North Carolina license:

  1. Visit your nearest DMV office to apply for your Learner’s Permit, provide the required documents & ID, pay the fees and have your picture taken.
  2. Take and pass the vision and written test to be issued a Learner's permit. (Read the North Carolina Driver Manual and take written practice tests). Consider making a DMV appointment or getting a line waiting concierge.
  3. Receive a Temporary Driving Certificate: Receive your Learner’s Permit via U.S. mail within 15 days
  4. Schedule your road test on the DMV website or you can schedule on Skip. You can do a walk-in at many locations, but you might be waiting a while. If you need a car or driver for your road test, you can schedule a road test concierge here.
  5. Before your road test, visit the ultimate North Carolina DMV road test guide to find out more information about the Delaware driving test.
  6. Receive your new Class C driver’s license via U.S. mail within 15 business days

Here are North Carolina driver's license exceptions to note:

  • Don’t need to practice driving before the road test?  Then you do not need a Learner’s Permit.
  • Don’t have a Social Security number?  Then you will need to provide documentation (Permanent Resident Card, 1-94 Form, Employment Authorization Card) to prove your legal presence in the U.S.
  • Under age 18?  Then you will need to complete the Graduated Driver Licensing program in order to obtain your full Class C driver’s license.
