Thinking about getting your driver's license at the Texas DMV? Here's exactly what you need to know to get your permit, pass your road test, and get your Texas driver license.

Here's How to Get Your Texas Driver's License

Below is information you need to gather and what you need to do in order to get a license in Texas.

Here's what you'll need to get your Texas license:

  1. Application for Driver License or Identification Card (Form DL-14A)
  2. Proof of identity, proof of Social Security number, proof of lawful U.S. presence, and proof of Texas residency (Full list of accepted documents)
  3. Proof of Texas vehicle registration and vehicle insurance OR a signed affidavit stating that you do not own a vehicle, and out-of-state license (if applicable)
  4. Learner’s Permit (if under age 18 or receiving your license for the first time and wish to practice driving before the road test)
  5. Certificate of completion from a qualifying driver’s education course AND proof of completion of the Impact Texas Young Drivers program (if between 18 and 24 years old)
  6. $25 for Class C driver’s license fee

Here's what you'll need to do to get your Texas license:

  1. Read the Texas Driver Manual and take written practice tests online
  2. Apply for your Learner’s Permit: submit the required documents and ID at the DMV, pass the vision and written test, submit payment and receive your learner's permit; consider making a DMV appointment or getting a line waiting concierge
  3. Practice driving to prepare for the road test. Once you're ready, schedule your road test on the DMV website or you can schedule on Skip. If you need a car or driver for your road test, you can schedule a road test concierge here.
  4. Before your road test, visit the ultimate Texas DMV road test guide to find out more information about the Arizona driving test.
  5. Visit your nearest DMV office to obtain your driver’s license, surrender your Learner’s Permit, submit payment and receive a temporary driver’s license receipt
  6. Receive your new Texas Class C driver’s license via U.S. mail within 3 weeks

Here are Texas Driver's License Exceptions to Note:

Already hold a valid driver’s license from another state?  Then you can skip the written and road tests.

  • Under age 18?  You must complete a Texas-approved driver’s education course before you may take the written exam for the Learner’s Permit.  Learn more about Texas’ provisional licensing requirements.
  • Over age 18 and don’t need to practice driving before taking the road test?  Then you don’t need a Learner’s Permit.
  • Failed the written or road tests?  You’ll have two more chances within 90 days to pass, otherwise you will need to begin the driver’s license application process again.
