Thinking about getting your driver's license at the Utah DMV? Here's exactly what you need to know to get your permit, pass your road test, and get your Utah driver license.

Here's How to Get Your Utah Driver's License

Here's what you'll need to get your Utah license:

  1. Proof of Identity and Legal/Lawful Status Verification
  2. Proof of Utah Residency/Mailing Verification if different than current Utah Driver License record (must provide two)
  3. Social Security Verification
  4. Proof of Driving Experience required for first Utah license
  5. Name Change documents (if applicable)
  6. Completed Driver License Application (Form DLD6a)
  7. $52.00 fee if 21 and older; $39.00 for provisional (20 and under.)

Here's what you'll need to do to get your Utah license:

  1. Read the Utah Driver Manual and take written practice tests online.
  2. Apply for your Learner’s Permit: submit the required documents and ID at the DMV; consider making a DMV appointment or getting a line waiting concierge.
  3. At the DMV, submit the application for a driver's license, pay the fees, pass the written test, pass the vision test, receive your Learner’s Permit.
  4. Once you're ready, schedule your road test on the DMV website or you can schedule on Skip. If you need a car or driver for your road test, you can schedule a road test concierge here.
  5. Before your road test, visit the ultimate Utah DMV road test guide to find out more information about the Utah driving test.
  6. Once you pass your road test you'll receive a temporary driver's license the same day. Then, you'll receive your new driver’s license via U.S. mail in 8-10 weeks.

Here are Utah driver's license exceptions to note:

  • Non-citizens who have legal status in the U.S. will receive a Limited-Term Driver License, which has the following conditions: The license will expire on the date of expiration on your legal presence document, or in 8 years, whichever is sooner. If there is no expiration date, it will expire 1 year from the date it was issued
  • You are allowed to take two (2) written knowledge tests in one (1) day. After three (3) attempts, you will be required to pay a second fee
  • If you fail the driving skills test you will be expected to practice before taking another test. You may take only one (1) driving skills test in a day. Failure to pass the required tests in three (3) attempts will result in having to pay another fee
  • All tests must be completed within six (6) months from the day you pay your fee. Any person may be asked to complete a driving skills test if the examiner feels the applicant’s ability to drive may be in question
  • Faxed or photocopied documents will NOT be accepted for any kind of document. All documents provided to the Division will be imaged and stored in a secure database and will be returned to the applicant
  • Non-English documents must be accompanied by a certified translation of the document. The translated document must be translated by one (1) of the division’s approved translators and the original and the translation are considered one (1) document for identification purposes
