Thinking about getting your driver's license at the Washington DMV? Here's exactly what you need to know to get your permit, pass your road test, and get your Washington driver license.

Here's How to Get Your Washington Driver's License

Here's what you'll need to get your Washington license:

  1. Proof of identity, Social Security number, and residency in Washington: Here's the complete list of acceptable documents
  2. Payment for required fees: $25 Learner’s Permit fee, $35 driver’s license application fee, $54 for Class D driver’s license (valid for 6 years)

Here's what you'll need to do to get your Washington license:

  1. Read the Washington Driver Manual and take written practice test online.
  2. Begin your application for your Learner’s Permit online.
  3. Apply for your Learner’s Permit: submit the required documents and ID at the DOL; consider making a DMV appointment or getting a line waiting concierge.
  4. At the DOL, submit the application for a driver's license, pay the fees, pass the written test, pass the vision test, receive your Learner’s Permit.
  5. Once you're ready, schedule your road test on the DMV website or you can schedule on Skip. If you need a car or driver for your road test, you can schedule a road test concierge here.
  6. Before your road test, visit the ultimate Washington DMV road test guide to find out more information about the Washington driving test.
  7. Receive your new Class D driver’s license via U.S. mail within 10 days

Here are Washington driver's license exceptions to note:

  • Do you hold a current out-of-state license?  Then the MVD will likely waive the written and road tests, but you'll still need to show up and apply for an Arizona license.
  • Under age 18?  Then a parent or guardian will need to sign your application with MVD as witness, or have the application signature notarized.
