What You’ll Need to Renew your Indiana Driver License

  • Your current Indiana driver license.
  • If you are changing your standard driver's license to a REAL ID license, you must provide: Proof of Identity, Social Security Number, Lawful U.S. status, Proof of Residency, Payment for Renewal, Valid for 2 years, if you're 85 years old or older: $7, Valid for 3 years, if you're 75 to 84 years old: $11, Valid for 6 years, if you're under 75 years old: $17.50.

What You’ll Need to Do to Renew your Indiana Driver License Online (must meet the following conditions):

  1. You hold a non-commercial driver's license, You are a citizen of the United States, There is no change in your name, residential address, or personal information, Your driver’s license has not expired for more than 180 days, You are not required to take an exam, You are within 12 months of your renewal date, You are under 75 years old, Your record does not have restrictions J or 2-9, Your previous photo is on file, You are not suspended or invalidated, Have less than 6 points on your driving record, You are over 21 years of age.
  2. Visit the myBMV website and create a user account. Provide the following:
    IN driver's license number, Social Security number (SSN), Zip code.
  3. Once you have created your account, log-in to your myBMV account and provide the following details: Full name, Date of birth, Address, Social Security number (SSN).
  4. Pay the required fee.
  5. You will receive your new IN driver's license in the mail within 14 days.

What You’ll Need to Do to Renew your Indiana Driver License in Person

  1. Visit your nearest DMV office. Consider making a DMV appointment or getting a line waiting concierge.
  2. Submit all the required documents. All documents must be originals or certified copies. Photocopies will not be accepted.
  3. Pay the renewal fee.
  4. You will receive your new IN driver's license in the mail within 14 days.

Here are Indiana driver's license renewal exceptions to note:

  • Your Indiana driver's license expires on your birthday. The number of years it is valid for depends on your age.
  • If you are under 21 years old, you will be issued a probationary IN driver's license that you must renew within 30 days after your 21st birthday.
  • If your Indiana driver license is lost, stolen, or damaged, you can still renew it as long as you know your driver's license number.
  • If you hold a valid IN driver's license, you can renew it up to 2 years before it expires.
  • Persons who are not United States citizens (legal temporary or permanent residents) may only renew their driver’s license in a branch and only 30 days prior to expiration date.
  • If you have 6 points or more on your driving record – or any points if you are under 21 years old – you must pass the vision exam, written driving knowledge test and driving skills test when you renew your Indiana driver’s license.
