What You’ll Need to Renew your Maine Driver License
- Proof of Maine residency. Check accepted documents here.

- Social Security Number. If your social security number is not on file with the Secretary of State, you must provide your social security number. If you believe you do not qualify for a social security number, you must present an unexpired immigration document, such as an I-94, or a written statement from the Social Security Administration to help us determine your ineligibility.
- Your current Maine driver license.
What You’ll Need to Do to Renew your Maine Driver License Online
To renew online, you will need the following:
- Social Security number
- Credit/debit card
- Printer
- Go to this website to renew your license online.
- Print your temporary license at home.
- Your permanent license will be mailed to you in 2-3 weeks. If you have not received your license within 60 days, call 624-9000, ext. 52114.
Note that if you receive an error message during your online renewal, you will be required to visit a BMV office and renew your license in person.
What You’ll Need to Do to Renew your Maine Driver License in Person
- Visit your nearest DMV office in person. Consider making a DMV appointment or getting a line waiting concierge.
- Submit the required documents and surrender your license.
- Pass a vision test (required at the first license renewal after attaining age 40, at every 2nd renewal after that, and at every license renewal after attaining age 62.)
- Pay the fees.
- Receive a temporary license which will be effective for 60 days. Your permanent license will be mailed to you in 2-3 weeks. If you have not received your license within 60 days, call 624-9000, ext. 52114.
Here are Maine driver's license renewal exceptions to note:
- If your license is suspended in Maine or in any other state, your license will not be renewed until your right to have a license is restored.
- If you develop a medical condition, it must be reported to the Bureau of Motor Vehicles. Have your physician complete the following document: Driver Medical Evaluation. Visit a motor vehicle office with your completed form to renew your license.
