What You’ll Need to Renew your Minnesota Driver License
- Your valid (or expired less than one year) Colorado driver license, instruction permit or Minnesota driver's license (current or expired for five years or less).
- Social Security number (SSN).
- For a name change, one of the following is necessary: Certified marriage certificate; A certified divorce or dissolution of marriage decree specifying the name change; Other certified court order specifying the name change.
What You’ll Do to Renew your Minnesota Driver License
- A renewal license can be obtained at any Driver’s License Office or Driver and Vehicle Services Exam Station. Before you go, use the Pre-Application feature for faster service.
- Complete an application at the renewal office
- Payment is by personal check or cash only
- Vision is screened for drivers’ licenses
- Picture is taken
Here are Minnesota driver's license renewal exceptions to note:
- Provisional licenses expire two years from the date of the original application, not on the birthday. Be sure to check the expiration before renewing. See Class D New Driver - Under Age 18 Page for more information.
- Anyone turning 21 years of age should not renew a license until 3 weeks before their 21st birthday.
- A parent or legal guardian must sign the application for anyone younger than 18 years of age.
