Wondering what you need and how you can renew your Texas Driver's License? Here is the ultimate guide to quickly and easily renewing your Texas driver license.

What You’ll Need to Renew your Texas Driver License

ONLINE or by PHONE:

  • A valid credit card - Visa, MasterCard, Discover, or American Express (For online renewal)
  • The last four digits of your Social Security number (For online renewal)
  • Your current Texas driver license or ID card. If you do not have audit number, you will be required to complete additional authentication with an additional fee* (For online renewal)

IN PERSON:

  • Completed Application For Renewal/Replacement/Change Of a Texas Driver License or Identification Card
  • Proof of identity, proof of Social Security number, proof of lawful U.S. presence, and proof of Texas residency (Full list of accepted documents)
  • Current driver’s license
  • Verification of Enrollment and Attendance Form (VOE Form), high school diploma, GED, OR recent report card and attendance record (if under age 18)
  • $33 renewal fee

What You’ll Need to Do to Renew your Texas Driver License Online or by Phone

  1. Go to the Texas DMV website or call 1-866-DL RENEW (1-866-357-3639)
  2. Provide/Type in the required documents.
  3. Pay the fee.
  4. Print your temporary license

What You’ll Need to Do to Renew your Texas Driver License in Person

  1. Visit your nearest DMV office in person. Consider making a DMV appointment or getting a line waiting concierge.
  2. Submit the required information.
  3. Submit payment.
  4. Print your temporary driver’s license (cannot be emailed; valid for 45 days).
  5. Receive your renewed Texas Class C driver’s license via U.S. mail in about 3 weeks.

Here are Texas driver's license renewal exceptions to note:

  • You will need to visit the DMV in person to renew your driver’s license if your last driver’s license renewal not done in person at the DMV, you are under age 18, you have you not yet verified your U.S. citizenship or legal U.S. presence with the DMV, or you are not a U.S. citizen
  • Did your license expire more than two years ago?  Then you will need to apply for a new driver’s license, including completing the written and road tests.
