What You’ll Need to Renew your Utah Driver License

Online Renewal:

  • Last Name
  • Driver License Number
  • Date issued
  • PIN - found in the letter mailed indicating eligibility to renew online

In-Person Renewal:

  • Completed Driver License Application (Form DLD6a)
  • Current Utah driver license
  • Proof of residence - if your address has changed from what is on your current license
  • Payment of a nonrefundable fee of $52.00

What You’ll Need to Do to Renew your Utah Driver License Online

  1. Visit the Utah Driver License Online Renewal
  2. Provide all the required information
  3. Pay the applicable fees
  4. Print a temporary license/ID card

What You’ll Need to Do to Renew your Utah Driver License in Person

  1. Visit your nearest DMV office in person. Consider making a DMV appointment or getting a line waiting concierge.
  2. Submit the required documents and surrender your license.
  3. Pass the eye (vision) test
  4. Pay a nonrefundable fee of $52.00
  5. After all requirements for a driver license have been successfully completed, you will receive a temporary license with photo on the same day.  The completed driver license will then be mailed to you in approximately 8-10 weeks

Here are Utah Driver's License Renewal Exceptions to Note:

  • You can renew your Utah driver license six (6) months prior to the expiration date.
  • License renewals are good for eight (8) years and will expire on your birth date of the eighth year.
  • 25-question written knowledge test (open-book) may be required if you have had more than four (4) citations in eight (8) years, have been suspended or revoked, or your Utah driver license has been expired for more than six (6) months.
  • If your Utah driver license will expire while you are temporarily out-of-state, you can apply to renew your Utah driver license more than six (6) months prior to the expiration date, if you provide proof that you will be absent from the state during the six (6) month period prior to the expiration date of your driver license.
  • After you have completed the online renewal application, you will have the opportunity to print a temporary license/ID card. A PDF file containing your personal DL/ID card information will be automatically downloaded to the computer that you are using. Print this at your own risk.
