Here's the ultimate guide to transferring your vehicle title at the Indiana DMV. We've simplified the entire process to save you time.
What You’ll Need to Transfer your Vehicle Title in Indiana
Purchasing from a private seller will require you and the seller to complete the title and registration process. You will have 45 days after your purchase to complete the title transfer. At the time of sale, make sure you accomplish this list:
- Obtain the vehicle title from the seller, with the following information filled out. (seller's signature, date of purchase, price of sale, information indicating you are the buyer, odometer reading).
- A completed Application for Certificate of Title (Form 205).
- If the odometer information isn't filled out on the title, provide an Odometer Disclosure Statement (Form 43230).
- Proof of residency (e.g. driver's license, current utility bill, etc.).
- Proof of vehicle inspection.
- Payment for your titling and registration fees.
For out-of-state title transfers...
Obtain proof of ownership from the dealer. This could include one of the following:
- Title certificate.
- Certificate of origin.
- Purchase order.
- Bill of sale.
- Sales contract.
Once you have all documents ready, you can submit them for an Indiana DMV title transfer in person at a BMV office location, or by mail to the address listed in the title transfer packet.
What You’ll Need to Do to Transfer your Vehicle Title in Indiana
- Visit any DMV office near you and bring the required documents stated above.
- You will need to pay the vehicle title fees, registration fees and any applicable sales tax.
- New-to-state Indiana residents will have to get a vehicle inspection and take extra steps if there is a lien hold on the vehicle title.
