This morning, Pfizer announced that it had reached a deal to sell 100 million more doses of its vaccine to the U.S. for $1.95 billion. The larger purchase will significantly increase the available vaccines in the U.S. Here’s what you need to know about the deal.

How Many Vaccine Doses Has the U.S. Purchased Total?

Including the 100 million doses the U.S. announced the purchase of today, 400 million total doses have been purchased (although not yet manufactured). Each vaccine requires two doses, so in total the U.S. has purchased enough vaccines for 200 million people. The U.S.’ total population is 330 million, including 74 million children. Neither the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine has yet been approved for populations under 16, although trials are underway.

When Will the Newly Purchased Doses be Delivered?

Pfizer has stated that they will be able to manufacture 70 million of the purchased 100 million doses by the end of June 2021. The remaining 30 million doses will be delivered by the end of July 2021.  “This new federal purchase can give Americans even more confidence that we will have enough supply to vaccinate every American who wants it by June 2021,”  said Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar in a statement.

Will the Vaccine Be Given to People for Free?

Yes, the vaccine will be distributed for free. One of the key portions of the stimulus bill passed this week was funding for vaccine distribution to ensure that it was available to all Americans regardless of their healthcare provider or ability to pay.

As this story develops, we will update this post. You can follow along with all of our vaccine coverage as distribution continues into 2021 on the Skip App, and you can track your own spot in the vaccine timeline with our free tracker, available on the Skip dashboard.
