The Trump administration announced new guidelines this week to states that all residents over 65 and with pre-existing conditions should be eligible for vaccines. In response, yesterday, January 13th, California announced that all residents over 65 are now eligible to get vaccinated and encouraged residents to register with their local health departments.

Approximately 5.3 million people have received a dose of the vaccine. Public health officials, including Moncef Slaoui, a scientific advisor for Operation Warp Speed (the vaccine development program in the US), have acknowledged that the rollout process has been slower than original predictions, saying "We know it should be better and we are working to make it better."

Here is the general order of distribution, beginning Monday December 14th and likely continuing through summer 2021:

  1. Frontline healthcare workers
  2. Nursing home residents
  3. Essential workers
  4. High-risk groups (i.e. immunosuppressed individuals)
  5. Teachers
  6. Higher-risk based on age (older/younger) or underlying conditions
  7. Lower-risk groups and rest of population
