This week, the California DMV announced extensions on all drivers’ license permits expiring between now and May 31st, 2021 to give drivers with California permits more time to schedule and take their behind-the-wheel test. Here’s what you need to know about the extensions.

How Long Are California's Driving Permits Extended?

Permits expiring between now and May 31st, 2021 will be extended for an extra six months or up to 24 months after first applying for a permit, whichever is earlier. The extensions will give new drivers more time to schedule their tests and not feel rushed to take their road test. The California DMV has encouraged everyone who can to avoid visiting the DMV now, and they've made many services available online as well, particularly related to registration and license renewals. The DMV reopened road tests in June with new safety protocols.

Are Commercial Permits Extended?

Commercial Drivers’ Permits are also extended, but only until the end of the year. Per federal guidelines, CDL permits expiring from March through December will be extended to December 31.

Are Driver's Licenses Extended?

California has extended some drivers’ licenses. Non-commerical driver’s licenses for senior drivers (over 70) have been extended one year past their original expiration date. Commercial drivers’ licenses are extended until December 31, 2020. Other drivers can renew online, via mail, or at the DMV.

Key Takeaways from California's Updating Driving Permit Policies

Don't feel rushed to go to the DMV and take your driving test. You have time and the California DMV is putting safety above everything else.

  1. If you can renew your documents online, renew online.
  2. If you have a behind-the-wheel test but want to postpone it because you're sick or don't feel comfortable, do it.
  3. Try to avoid visits to the DMV, but if you do need to go, consider a line waiting concierge to wait in line for you.
  4. If you do take your California behind-the-wheel test and you need a car or driver to help you, consider a road test concierge.
