Here's How to Get Your Delaware Driver's License:

Here's what you'll need to get your Delaware license:

Documents verifying the following:

  1. Your identity, including your full name and date of birth
  2. Your lawful presence in the US
  3. Your Social Security Number (SSN) or a letter from the Social Security administration, stating that you are ineligible for an SSN
  4. Your residency in Delaware (2 documents)
  5. Change of name, if any
  6. $40 fee in Cash or in check

Here's what you'll need to do to get your Delaware license:

  1. Visit any DMV Office near you to apply in person and complete the application form available at the DMV.
  2. Provide the required documents, have your picture taken and pay the $40 fee in cash or in check.
  3. Take and pass the eye screen and written test to be issued a Learner's permit. (Read the Delaware Driver Manual and take written practice tests).
  4. Practice driving with a licensed driver who is at least 21 years old.
  5. Schedule your road test on the DMV website or you can schedule on Skip. If you need a car or driver for your road test, you can schedule a road test concierge here.

  7. Take and pass the road test at the same location that issued the permit but not until 10 days after the permit was issued. If you do not pass the road test within the 6 month period, you are permitted one extension of the learner's permit for an additional 6 months, provided application is made and a second fee of $5.00 is paid before the original permit expiration date, otherwise your fee is forfeited.
  8. Once you pass the road test you will be issued a License valid for 8 years.

Here are Delaware driver's license exceptions to note:

  • Individuals while driving or operating a road roller, road machinery or farm tractor or implement of husbandry temporarily on a highway.
  • Non-resident operators, over the age of 16 years, currently licensed in their home state or country. The license must be in the driver's possession.
  • Members of the Armed Forces of the United States who are serving on active duty and any dependent of the member if they possess a valid driver license from their state of domicile.
