Thinking about getting your driver's license at the Illinois DMV? Here's exactly what you need to know to get your permit, pass your road test, and get your Illinois driver license.

Here's How to Get Your Illinois Driver's License:

Here's what you'll need to get your Illinois license:

  1. Proof of identification
  2. Complete list of acceptable documents
  3. $30 payment for Class D driver’s license fee ($5 if 18-20 years old)

Here's what you'll need to do to get your Illinois license:

  1. Read the Illinois Driver Manual and take online practice exams to prepare for the written test (optional).
  2. Visit your nearest Driver Services Facility: submit the required documents and ID at the DMV; consider making a DMV appointment or getting a line waiting concierge.
  3. Pass the vision test and written test (Read the Illinois Driver Manual and take written practice tests).
  4. In Illinois, road tests are walk-in only, so you're not able to schedule ahead of time (unless you're getting a commercial or temporary driver's license, then you can schedule). If you need a car or driver for your road test, you can schedule a road test concierge here.
  5. Before your road test, visit the ultimate Illinois DMV road test guide to find out more information about the Illinois driving test.
  6. Pay the required fee.
  7. Receive a temporary driver’s license.
  8. Receive your Class D driver’s license via U.S. mail.

Here are Illinois driver's license exceptions to note:

  • Need to practice driving before the road test?  Then you first will need to apply for a Learner’s Permit.
  • Under age 18?  Then you will need to adhere to the Graduated Driver's License program, which requires first attending Driver’s Education and obtaining a Learner’s Permit.
  • Age 18-20?  Then you will need to complete an Adult Driver Education course before you may take the road test.
  • Failed the written or road test?  You will have two more attempts to pass within a year.
