Here's How to Get Your New Mexico Driver's License:

Here's what you'll need to get your New Mexico license:

To obtain a REAL ID driver’s license, you will need to bring the following documents to any MVD Field Office:

  1. Proof of identity
  2. Two (2) proofs of New Mexico residency.

To obtain a Standard Driver's License, you will need to bring the following documents to any MVD Field Office:

  1. Proof of identity and age
  2. Two (2) proofs of New Mexico residency.
  3. $18.00 for a four-year license or $34.00 for an eight-year license.

Here's what you'll need to do to get your New Mexico license:

  1. Take the None for the Road DWI Awareness Class. This is required for the applicants who are 18 to 24 years of age; aged 25 or above, and have been convicted of DWI (DUI)
  2. Visit any MVD Office near you to apply in person, complete your application form at the MVD and provide the required documents.
  3. Take and pass the vision and knowledge test to be issued a Learner's permit. (Read the New Mexico Driver Manual and take written practice tests).
  4. Schedule with Skip and pass the Road Skills Test.

Here are New Mexico driver's license exceptions to note:

  • If you fail, you must wait 1 week before retaking.
  • If you cannot provide proof of lawful status, you may only apply for the Standard License or ID card.
  • MVD agents may not accept any document in a language other than English without a full and complete translation that is certified as such by the translator
  • Your New Mexico driver license will be REAL ID compliant if you submitted enough documents. If you don't have enough documents, you will get a Driver's Authorization Card (DAC).
