What You’ll Need to Renew your Louisiana Driver License

  • For online renewal: The Computer generated renewal invitation, Your LA driver's license number, Date of Birth, Last 4 of  SSN, Credit card for payment of the renewal fee (Standard license valid for 6 years: $32.25 to $38.25, Drivers 70 years old or older, valid for 6 years: $18.75 to $24.75, LA driver's licenses expired for more than 10 days: $15 additional late fee), A printer to print Receipt.
  • For in-person: Application of Renewal, proof of identity, your current driver's license, 1 primary document (Birth certificate, U.S. passport, Military ID), 1 secondary document (Social Security Card, School photo ID, Health insurance card), or 3 secondary documents, Social Security number (SSN), 2 documents proving your residency, liability insurance if you own a vehicle, Payment for Renewal Fee.
  • For out-of-state: A completed Temporarily Residing Out of State Application for Reconstructed Duplicate/Renewal License/ID Card (Form DPSMV2013), Payment for the renewal fee.
  • By mail: Complete the Temporarily Residing Out of State Application for Reconstructed Duplicate/Renewal License/ID Card (Form DPSMV2013), Be under 70 years old, Have renewed your last LA driver's license in person, Not have a Louisiana driver's license that has been expired for 12 months or more, Not have a cancelled, suspended, or lost/stolen LA driver license, Be a U.S. citizen.

What You’ll Need to Do to Renew your Louisiana Driver License Online

  1. Visit the Louisiana Office of the Motor Vehicles Expresslane at https://expresslane.dps.louisiana.gov/DLRenewal/dl2.aspx.
  2. Enter the renewal information and confirm the record.
  3. View the fee breakdown.
  4. View and print receipt.

What You’ll Need to Do to Renew your Louisiana Driver License in Person

  1. Visit your nearest DMV office. Consider making a DMV appointment or getting a line waiting concierge.
  2. Complete an application available at the OMV.
  3. Submit the necessary Documents
  4. Prove your liability Insurance, if you own a vehicle.
  5. Pay the renewal fee.
  6. The OMV will issue a temporary license which is valid until you receive your permanent license in the mail.

What You’ll Need to Do to Renew your Louisiana Driver License by Mail

1. Have all the requirements available and follow the steps on the renewal notice.

2. If you are renewing while your are out state, you’ll need to mail the required documents mentioned above to: Office of Motor Vehicles, Attention: Reconstructed License, P.O. Box 64886, Baton Rouge, LA 70896.

Here are Louisiana driver's license renewal exceptions to note:

  • You cannot renew online if your name or address has changed, or your LA driver's license has been lost, stolen, or damaged. You must renew it in person.
  • If your Louisiana driver's license has been expired for more than 10 days, you can still renew it, but you must pay an additional $15 late fee.
  • If your LA driver license is suspended, you must have it reinstated first before you can renew it.
  • If you hold a valid Louisiana driver’s license you may renew it up to 180 days before it expires and 10 days after it expires without paying any additional fees.
  • You must renew it in person if:
  • You did not received a renewal notice.
  • Your last renewal was completed online or by mail.
  • You are required to take any tests.
  • A person 70 years old or older may renew by mail if they have a medical diagnosis that prevents then form going to the OMV in person.
  • If you are eligible to renew by mail, the Louisiana DMV will send you an invitation to do so.
  • For transactions by mail, the LA DMV accepts payment by check or money order payable to the “Office of Motor Vehicles."
  • If you are a military member stationed outside of Louisiana, and your LA driver's license expires while on active duty, it will remain valid for 60 days after your discharge date. This also applies to your spouse and dependents.
  • If you're out-of state and need to renew your license, you can renew if: You meet the eligibility requirements to renew online or by mail, Your photo is on file with the LA OMV, Your last renewal was completed in person.
