Here's How to Get Your Alaska Driver's License

Here's what you'll need to get your Alaska license:

  1. Proof of legal name and date of birth (Primary Document)
  2. Secondary document to verify the primary document
  3. Proof of principal residence
  4. Proof of your Social Security number

Here's what you'll need to do to get your Alaska license:

  1. Visit any DMV Office near you to apply in person and submit the required documents and pay the fees.
  2. Complete the application form. (You can download form 478 and complete it at home, however, you are required to sign it in front of a DMV representative.)
  3. Take and pass the Alcohol and Drug awareness knowledge, vision and written test to be issued a Learner's permit. (Read the Alaska Driver Manual and take written practice tests). Consider making a DMV appointment or getting a line waiting concierge.

Here are Alaska driver's license exceptions to note:

• The DMV has developed additional services to assist Alaska's rural residents with licensing issues unique to remote communities. Please read the guide to rural driving.

• Alaska resident will need to present a REAL ID compliant license/ID, or another acceptable form of identification, for accessing Federal facilities, entering nuclear power plants, and boarding commercial aircraft.
