Caveats and Exceptions
- You have 45 days after the purchase date to complete the car title transfer. If you do meet this deadline, you will have to pay a late fee
- Upon purchase of your vehicle, you must pay a 7% sales tax to the state. If you have not paid this tax, you will have to pay it to the BMV in order to apply for your Indiana title
- A VIN inspection is required for any vehicle that has never had an Indiana title. If you are new to the state, you will need to have this completed
- The VIN inspection can be completed at any IN BMV branch office for free, or by a police officer who may charge a fee of up to $5. The police officer will need to fill out the Affidavit of Police Officer/Physical Inspection of an Indiana Resident's Vehicle/Watercraft (Form 39530)
- While you do not need to get an inspection before you register your vehicle, you will be required to get an emissions inspection every 2 years to keep your vehicle legal.
