What You’ll Need to Renew your Kentucky Driver License

  • Your current driver license.
  • Proof of residency (if you moved).
  • Renewal fee of $20.
  • If your name has changed, bring the original document certifying the change.

What You’ll Need to Do to Renew your Kentucky Driver License Online

Online renewals are not offered in Kentucky at this time.

What You’ll Need to Do to Renew your Kentucky Driver License by Mail

Kentucky Law allows only military personnel to be issued a Class D Driver's License by mail. All other drivers must appear in the Circuit Court Clerk's office.

If you are in the military, contact the Circuit Court Clerk's office in the Kentucky county of residence for an application and instructions.

Here are Kentucky driver's license renewal exceptions to note:

  • You may renew you license up to 6 months prior to the expiration date if you are older than 21.
  • Check your license expiration date regularly beacuse the Kentucky Department of Transportation has stopped mailing reminding notices to the drivers whose licenses are about to expire.
  • A vision and written test will be require if your license is expired for more than one year.
