Here's the ultimate guide to transferring your vehicle title at the Maryland DMV. We've simplified the entire process to save you time.

What You’ll Need to Transfer your Vehicle Title in Maryland

  • Exercise tax (based on purchase price, age and mileage).
  • Proof of auto insurance.
  • Apply and pay required $50 titling fee.
  • Apply for Certificate of Title (when the title originally come from another state).
  • Submit a Certificate of Inspection (if possible).
  • Proof that the vehicle passed Vehicle Emissions Inspection Program (VEIP) test.

Note: Your title will be mailed to you regardless of how you apply. If you also register the vehicle, your registration card, license plates and expiration stickers can be provided immediately when you apply in person to the MVA; otherwise, these items also will be mailed to you.

What You’ll Need to Do to Transfer your Vehicle Title in Maryland

  1. Make an appointment​ to visit MDOT MVA.
  2. Bring all the required documents to the MVA office, and pay the title transfer fee ($100) and the sales tax (maximum 6% of the sale price).
