What You’ll Need to Renew your Iowa Driver License

  • For online renewal: First and Last name, Last 5 digits of your SSN, Iowa driver’s license number, Credit card or debit card for payment (Renewal fee plus $1.50 online processing fee)
  • For in-person renewal: Current Iowa driver’s license, Proof of identity and date of birth, Social security number, Name change documents - if applicable, Proof of residence - if your address has changed from what is on your current license, Payment

What You’ll Need to Do to Renew your Iowa Driver License Online

  1. You must meet the following requirement: You're at least 18 through 69 years old, You are a U.S. citizen and resident of Iowa, You have a valid non-commercial driver's license, Your driver's license expires within the next 180 days or hasn't been expired for more than 1 year and 60 days, You do NOT need to make any changes to your driver's license information (such as your name or address), You last renewal was done in person, Your driver's license does NOT have restrictions E, G, J, T, Q, or R, You do not need to submit results from a medical or vision examination, You do not have a driver's license that shows “Valid Without Photo".
  2. Visit the Iowa Online License Renewal website.
  3. Provide all the required information.
  4. Pay all the applicable fees.
  5. You will receive your new card in the mail in approximately 21 days.

What You’ll Need to Do to Renew your Iowa Driver License in Person

  1. Visit your local IA DOT Office. Consider making a DMV appointment or getting a line waiting concierge.
  2. Call ahead to confirm business hours, since smaller locations may not be open some days during the week and submit all the required documents.
  3. Complete a vision screening.
  4. Pass the written and driving test, if your license has been expired for more than 1 year.
  5. Pay the required license renewal fees.

Here are Iowa driver's license renewal exceptions to note:

  • If you are less than 18, please see about either your instruction permit or your provision license.
  • You may renew your IA driver's license up to 180 days before it expires. In some cases, the Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) will allow you to renew your driver's license up to 1 year before the expiration date; however, you will need to explain why you are requesting an earlier renewal.
  • Your Iowa driver's license remains valid for 60 days after the expiration date. The IA DOT gives you this extra time to process your renewal application.
  • If you moved to a new address, you will need to notify the DMV within 30 days of moving. You can update your record with the DOT online. You will not be issued a new license if you update online.
  • If you are 72 years old or older, your driver's license will be valid for 2 years
  • If you are unable to renew your Iowa driver's license in person because you are temporarily residing outside the state, you can request an extension of up to 6 months. You must submit the request within 180 days before or 60 days after your driver's license expires.
