What You’ll Need to Renew your Kansas Driver License

Proof of Kansas residency and principal residence address could be the renewal card you received in the mail providing it shows your "principal residence" address not just a mailing address. If you did not receive the renewal card in the mail, you must provide something else as proof of Kansas residency and principal address. Click here for a list of acceptable documents.

What You’ll Need to Do to Renew your Kansas Driver License in Person

  1. Visit any DMV office near you.
  2. Provide the required documents.
  3. Pass a vision exam. The vision exam can be done in the office or the vision form can be completed by your vision specialist.
  4. Pay the applicable fee.
  5. Have a new photograph and signature captured.

What You’ll Need to Do to Renew your Kansas Driver License by Mail

  1. Fill in and print form DEMI-1.
  2. Prepare the fee of $26 (for 6 year license) by money order, check or major credit card. Make checks payable to KDOR and mail it to the address below.
  3. Prepare supporting documents (follow the instructions on form DEMI-1.)Email the form and any scanned documents to KDOR_DEMI1@KS.GOV.
    Or mail the form and copies of documents together with your payment to:
    Kansas Department of Revenue
    P.O. Box 2188 Topeka
    KS 66601-2188

You may renew your license by mail only if

  • You are out of state when your license expires, but you are a Kansas resident. (e.g., military, dependents of military, missionaries or college students)
  • Your expiring license photo is in the driver's licensing office database.
  • You are a US citizen or can provide lawful presence documents along with application.

Here are Kansas driver's license renewal exceptions to note:

  • If you are turning 21 the year you are requesting a renewal, your request until your 21st birthday cannot be processed.
  • If the driver license has been expired for more than 1 year, you will also have to take the written and driving examinations.
  • If an applicant is suspected to be unable to exercise ordinary and reasonable control of a vehicle, a driver's license examiner may also require any applicant to pass a written or driving skills test.
