- Your license will be sent to the mailing address on your driver record. Allow about 10 business days for processing.

What You’ll Need to Do to Renew your North Dakota Driver License by Mail
If you are a North Dakota Resident temporarily out of state and wish to renew a non-commercial license, you may renew one time by mail provided you can provide proof of a North Dakota resident address. Inquire at dl@nd.gov and provide us with your North Dakota Driver's Number and out of state mailing address to determine eligibility.
If you are living in another state, you are required to obtain a license in the new state.
Here are North Dakota driver's license renewal exceptions to note:
- If your license expired more than one year ago, you will have to retake both written and road tests.
- You may not drive if your driver license has expired. If you plan to drive after your license expired, you may renew it up to one year past its expiration date. If needed, you may renew it up to 10 months before the expiration date. You won't lose the time remaining on your old license.
